SCHOOL PROGRAMS

The Wool Mine provides many curriculum based workshops for kindergarden to Grade six. All of our workshops are conducted using wool as our medium. We have projects for bird and animal studies, habitat, rocks and minerals, the fur trade, peru, insects, life cycle, flowers, recycling, urban and rural communities and many more. We have projects that can be completed in half a day, full day and multiple days. Please view pictures of the many projects we have made in school.

HALF DAY PROGRAM

Our Half-Day workshops are a full morning or a full afternoon. Your children will complete the project we are making in the time allotted.

I’m open to many ideas and if I can figure out how to do an idea you have and bring it to life in wool felt I will!

FULL DAY PROGRAM

Our full day workshops are a full working school day. Your children will complete the required project selected.

MUTLIPLE DAY PROGRAM

Our multiple day workshops can be several days long depending on what we make and accessories talked about for the project. Your children will complete all items that we discuss prior to my coming to your school. These programs are designed to meet the teachers needs for his or her class room and may vary depending on what each class room discusses and wants. PRICING

In our programs children learn the art of making. It is exciting for them to see how fluffy wool gets transformed into a sturdy, dense piece of fabric whether it is a flat picture that they can take home or a large play mat that stays in their class. They also can make 3-D individual projects such as bird houses to take home or large tents that stay in the class for class enjoyment. We are also happy to customize a workshop to fit your curriculum.

Cost of a full day workshop is $500.00 plus GST

Cost of a half day workshop is $300.00 plus GST

Farm tours are $300.00 plus GST

Author Presentation

In this presentation I take the children through my book making process. We discuss story writing and different ways of getting ideas. We also talk about different mediums used to create illustrations. I then demonstrate to them how I make my illustrations by creating a simple picture for them. They get to see the raw wool being transformed into a fabric picture. Next I take them to my imaginary print shop where I show the children my colour on colour film transparencies. This shows them how the colours mix as the picture passes from one coloured ink drum to the next. Lastly, the children get to see the large illustration and text pages as they come off the press and are ready to be sliced and bound into a finished book.

This is a fun hands on presentation where children are invited to touch and smell the raw wool as well as the cleaned and colored wool. We also discuss other fibres that I use in my art work and I show them the many other things I have created with wool besides books. It is an interactive presentation that captivates both children and teachers.

Cost of a full day author presentation is: $500.00 plus travel expenses.

Each presentation is approximately 45 minutes long. Maximum group size for each presentation is 100 students.

FARM SCHOOL TOURS

Schools can make field trips out to The Wool Mine and see how we use our animals for our clothing business. The children will make their own picture out of raw wool and see how our machine turns it into cloth. We will dye wool and see how different colours mix together to create new colours. Children will also be introduced to our farm life and learn how we bottle feed any lambs that need to be taken care of as well as how we care for our other farm animals. Time permitting we will print with nature.

This workshop is great for all studies in particular urban and rural communities. Farm tours are $300.00 plus GST.
